Accident on Missouri highway injures 5

An accident on Highway 61 in Cape Girardeau County injured five people, according to authorities. The August 3 incident happened near Jackson at approximately 3:15 p.m. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reportedly filed multiple felony charges against a 39-year-old woman in connection with the accident.

Authorities stated that the 39-year-old woman was driving a vehicle on the highway when she veered off the road, overcorrected and then returned to the roadway only to collide head-on with a van. The 39-year-old driver and two other occupants of her vehicle, a 17-year-old passenger and an 8-year-old passenger, suffered serious injuries in the accident, authorities reported. Emergency personnel transported them to St. Francis Medical Center.

A fourth occupant of that vehicle, a 15-year-old passenger, and the 70-year-old driver of the van both reportedly suffered minor injuries. Emergency personnel transported them to St. Francis Hospital as well. The 39-year-old woman is facing felony charges of possession of a controlled substance and second-degree assault.

People who suffer injuries in car accidents like this one may wish to pursue civil action as a consequence. For, in the event that a collision can be demonstrably attributed to another party's actionable behavior, such as excessive speeding or impaired driving, the victims of the accident may be entitled to financial compensation for damages related to their injuries.

By retaining a personal injury lawyer and filing suit against the at-fault party, accident victims might be awarded restitution for hospital bills, medical expenses and even lost wages if their injuries prove to be disabling. In order to prevail, claimants in a personal injury lawsuit must demonstrate the specific damages they suffered and prove that the defendant should be held liable for the accident.
